Jurors in the trial also watched a videotape of Hamlin in the El Dorado County sheriff's department describing the situation with his wife Susan, saying that he was afraid that they would not believe his story of a murder plot against him by the Satanic cult.
"Attorney Hamlin, 45, said he delayed contacting the Sheriff's Department and that he wanted his statement "to be like my closing argument in a death penalty murder case. In the videotape, Hamlin said his wife has been sexually abused by her father and told the detective about notebooks he had at home which documented recovered memories about the molestation.
Hamlin said "that Susan Hamlin 'wanted to accept Jesus Christ.' He told the detective that a female friend of his wife was trying to get Susan Hamlin into a prostitution ring that operated at a Starbucks," according to the Mountain Democrat.In three days of testimony, Richard Hamlin denied a litany of allegations, including beating and torturing his wife, endangering and brainwashing his children, and forcing her to admit to the murder plot.
According to the Sacramento Bee, "Hamlin also told jurors his vengeful father-in-law, whom he accused of molesting his wife when she was a child, was the architect of the satanic plot.
"Several defense witnesses testified earlier that Susan Hamlin sought them out as childhood friends to find missing "pieces of the puzzle." Other testimony showed she wrote hundreds of pages of journals in a quest for 'repressed memories' and confided in church members that she was a victim of molestation.
